Packing up the household is progressing polepole, at its own convenient pace. The house is still quite a mess, but at least we managed to fill our bags, boxes and suitcase today.
Packing
Packing up your household can be a daunting task, especially if, like us, you have lived in one place for a while. Cr*p just keeps piling up and it looks like quite a challenge to wade through all of it. But to me, going through old picture and boxed I haven’t seen the inside of for the past few years, it’s quite the cathartic experience. Continue reading “Packing”
Rent
Today marked another step towards moving Down Under: we paid our first ever rent in Australia! Yes, we’re still four weeks away from actually going there, but our rental agreement started anyway. Continue reading “Rent”
Going to school
Part of the decision on where to rent a house (and, actually, which ones to visit) was always which primary school is in the neighborhood for our kids to go to. With the house question settled, it was time to visit the local school and take a look. Continue reading “Going to school”
Going home
It’s been four weeks since I stepped on a plane in Düsseldorf to begin my journey to Melbourne. Four weeks of getting to know the new city and new country that we will call home for the next few years. Four weeks of working together with my new colleagues and meeting new clients.
The impressions I have collected in these past weeks have been quite intense. From the tranquil mornings in the parks of South Melbourne to the parade on ANZAC day, from the copious amounts of – quite good – coffee being consumed here to the many houses and apartments I have seen, from footy to driving on the wrong side of the street.
But, besides all of that, I think what has struck me most is the open and friendly people I have encountered along the way. Striking up a conversation in the elevator and sharing a few comments about footy, or the pizza you are carrying, is the most normal thing in the world. The pinnacle of that was the border guard checking our passports when we left Melbourne. He actually engaged us in friendly conversation and we shared some jokes. I did not know border guards with a sense of humour were even allowed into the force. 🙂
I am very much looking forward to living in this far-away part of the world and I cannot wait to bring the whole family there. I hope that the kids will enjoy it as much as we have.
On our way home again
After a very successful and pleasant stay in our new home town in Melbourne and surroundings we are now heading home again. Bags are packed. Or rather stored at Olivers office. As we are will only be checking in a bag with emty bags.
For those interested you can follow our flights. If you have never tracked a flight before, do it, it is really cool. You get an almost live update of the location of the airplane during the flight. And you will have plenty of time, since we will be flying for almost 24 hours…..

8 May QF 9 departure 22.55 (10.55 pm) flight from Melbourne to Dubai
9 May QF 8059 departure 09.00 (09.00 am) flight from Dubai to Hamburg
We will now still have a goodbye beer with Olivers colleagues, then we will still eat a bit and then off to the airport for our checkin. As unfortunately the online checkin did not work.
We can hardly wait to see the kids again, two weeks without them is a long time. Luckily we know that they are in good hands and are having a good time in Elmshorn!
Wildlife encounter!
I was riding my bicycle along the Yarra River and then it happened. Continue reading “Wildlife encounter!”
A night on the town
After getting the good news, we decided that it was time for some R&R downtown.
First impression of our house
We are extremely happy with the outcome of our house in Mount Waverley which we can call our home. Continue reading “First impression of our house”
