I know, I know. Writing about the weather is kind of like admitting that you have nothing better to say and are trying to fill your blog. But this time it’s different.

Well, I guess it was inevitable. After having been to all the open-air skate parks in the immediate vicinity it was only a matter of time till we needed to go visit an indoor variety. And so, for Christmas, Kai got a Groupon for The Bunker and today I am taking him and a friend of his there. Continue reading “Skatepark”
A few weeks ago I posted about the bush fire that was raging along the Great Ocean Road. Today, on our way back from a short camping trip down the coast (more about that later), we drove through the area and got a first-hand-view at the aftermath of the fire. It was pretty intense. With the new year being well and truly under way (Happy New Year, everyone, by the way!) it is time to reflect on a few of the traditions we have in the Netherlands and how we brought them over here. Continue reading “New Year traditions”
With Christmas over…
Well, OK, technically in Australia it’s still Christmas. You see, Boxing Day fell on a Saturday this year, and since we can’t just lose a public holiday, it gets moved to Monday. Which is today.
Well, with Christmas almost over, it was time to do something else than sit at home, eat good food and play all the new games we got this year. It was time to go for a hike. Continue reading “Out and about”
Just before heading to bed, my thoughts go out to the men and women fighting the blaze that is currently threatening several small towns not two hours from where I sit, as well as to everyone living or vacationing in the area.
A total fire ban is also in effect for all of Melbourne. Continue reading “Bushfire in Melbourne”
It is December 25th, Christmas Day, and above 35 degrees. We’ve unwrapped the presents, had some nice breakfast and are now slowly cooking away at home, enjoying our gifts and each other’s company.
And, just to kill the suspense, yes, I did get some socks and underwear for Christmas. Continue reading “Christmas day”
If we were still in Europe, we would probably be at my moms place right now, the living room floor would be covered in a mixture of wrapping paper, toys and new socks and our bellies would be full to bursting with the fondue we just ate (the one with the broth, not the cheesy kind). Oh, and we probably would have had a glass of wine or five.
But since were not in Europe, we decided to do things a bit differently today. Continue reading “Christmas Eve”
Driving through the city today, it struck me again at how green this city of Melbourne actually is. Every other block (or so it seems) there is a little (or not so little) park, mostly called reserves here, that break up the sea of houses. End even though summer is coming quickly, and everything is getting pretty dry, there is still quite a bit of green to be seen. Continue reading “Green Melbourne”
These past few days we have seen quite the dramatic increase in temperature in Victoria. The expected dry heat has hit us full in the face, along with the things considered “normal” here in Australia: bush fires. Continue reading “Heat”
