Project Avo started almost exactly one month ago. Time for a status update. Continue reading “Project Avo – Update”

Project Avo – the beginning
Something I have never done, but always wanted to try, is growing my own Avocado tree. And since we are now living in warmer climates, I think the chances or success are actually pretty OK.
And a new year has started. Time to try something (else) new! So here we go. Continue reading “Project Avo – the beginning”
New Year traditions
With the new year being well and truly under way (Happy New Year, everyone, by the way!) it is time to reflect on a few of the traditions we have in the Netherlands and how we brought them over here. Continue reading “New Year traditions”
Bushfire in Melbourne
Just before heading to bed, my thoughts go out to the men and women fighting the blaze that is currently threatening several small towns not two hours from where I sit, as well as to everyone living or vacationing in the area.
A total fire ban is also in effect for all of Melbourne. Continue reading “Bushfire in Melbourne”
Christmas day
It is December 25th, Christmas Day, and above 35 degrees. We’ve unwrapped the presents, had some nice breakfast and are now slowly cooking away at home, enjoying our gifts and each other’s company.
And, just to kill the suspense, yes, I did get some socks and underwear for Christmas. Continue reading “Christmas day”
Christmas Eve
If we were still in Europe, we would probably be at my moms place right now, the living room floor would be covered in a mixture of wrapping paper, toys and new socks and our bellies would be full to bursting with the fondue we just ate (the one with the broth, not the cheesy kind). Oh, and we probably would have had a glass of wine or five.
But since were not in Europe, we decided to do things a bit differently today. Continue reading “Christmas Eve”
Green Melbourne
Driving through the city today, it struck me again at how green this city of Melbourne actually is. Every other block (or so it seems) there is a little (or not so little) park, mostly called reserves here, that break up the sea of houses. End even though summer is coming quickly, and everything is getting pretty dry, there is still quite a bit of green to be seen. Continue reading “Green Melbourne”
Christmas Europe 2 Australia
Celebrating Christmas in 36 degrees is completely different from last years’ white Christmas, so it takes some adapting. Which we did: we traded our Christmas pine tree for a decorated palm tree! Continue reading “Christmas Europe 2 Australia”
Heat
These past few days we have seen quite the dramatic increase in temperature in Victoria. The expected dry heat has hit us full in the face, along with the things considered “normal” here in Australia: bush fires. Continue reading “Heat”
About to break a record
Looking at the weater forecast we will not only face a hot week, it looks like we will also be breaking some (personal) records. The highst temperature ever measured in the Netherlands was 38.6 degrees in 1944. If the predictions are correct we will be getting close to 40 degrees by the end of the week. So I guess no white christmas for us this year…. Continue reading “About to break a record”
