11 reasons to visit Wilsons Promontory

Although we spent less then 24 hours in Wilsons Promontory, which did not really end the way we planned it, this place has captured our hearts. And we will return to this most Southern part of mainland Australia. Why?

Here are our 11 reasons to visit the ‘Proms’:

1. It simply is a stunning place.
2. The beaches that all have a different feel to it. There are view points and a couple of easily accessible beaches. But also a lot more that can only be discovered on foot.

   

3. Camp at Tidal River camp. Even though this place is huge, with 480 camping spots, it does not feel so big as it is stretched out and there is a hill in the middle. You can go camping, or rent a cabin or a luxury retreat. They have African like safari tents! Not cheap, but probably the best way to spend the night. Stockyard camp is the alternative, a small campsite at the entrance. The other campsites in the park can only be reached by foot. Or you could stay outside the park.
4. Hear the sound of your footsteps while walking over Squaky beach.
5. To walk the Mount Oberon Summit walk, a 3.6 km uphill climb, but you get rewarded with a 360 degrees view over the Promontory, ocean on three sides, as it is a peninsula.
6. To have a pick nick on Whisky Bay, but bring wine instead of Whiskey. There is only one convenience store in the park at the campsite and it is rather expensive, so bring your own food supply. The nearest stores are quite a drive outside of the park and that is time you would rather spent inside the park.
7. To get up close with a wombat. They walk around the campsite everywhere, they are curious and not scared of humans, so you can easily get up close to one.
8. To paddle board on the Tidal River.

   

9. To do an overnight walk. There basically is one road going from the entrance of the Park straight to Tidal River Camp. There are not even 4×4 tracks. The rest of the park is only accessible by foot or boat only.
10. At sunset the road turns into a super highway for wombats and kangaroos.
11. To go on one, or even many more, coastal walks. As with most parks in Australia the walks are very clearly sign posted. Pick up a map at the entrance or from the visitor center and select a walk.

Staying at Tidal River might be expensive, but sooooooo worth it.
