Arriving in the dark, late last night, it did look like a good spot. The Wilsons Promontory seemed like a great place to wake up in and celebrate my birthday. Continue reading “Is this a good camping spot?”

Four people and a new life in Australia. How much of your ‘old’ life can you take along with you on a flight? A post about being creative with luggage allowance, items that we are glad that we brought, items that we should not have taken and lessons learned. This is our experience. Great Ocean Road our experience
The Great Ocean Road is one of those famous routes that you have to have seen when you are in Australia. The expectations that we had was a coastal route similar to the French Cote d’Azur. Beautiful scenery with a small or bigger ‘tourist’ village every few km’s. We wanted to go to a campsite at the Great Otway National Park, close to the town of Cape Otway, almost in the middle of the Great Ocean Road How different reality was. Continue reading “Great Ocean Road our experience”
Bush camping on different continents
Now that we have been bush camping in Australia it made me think back of other bush camping experience that I have gathered through the years in Europe, Africa and North America. There are still many places that I haven’t explored yet.
Did you know that it is not always necessary to travel far for these experiences, they can be right next to your doorstep, even if you live in the Netherlands. Continue reading “Bush camping on different continents”

Do you need police, fire or ambulance?
Our second night in the bush: It is a beautiful evening and we are alone in Buandik bush camp in the western side of the Grampians. The other couple had left and the two guys have not returned to camp yet, so it is just us. That little green dot between the trees is our tent.
10 p.m. Oliver is picking up his mobile phone dialing 000. Which gets answered with: “Is it really an emergency? Do you need police, fire or ambulance?” How did we end up calling the emergency number? Let me take you back to minutes before. Continue reading “Do you need police, fire or ambulance?”
Koala encounter
We are on the Great Ocean Road and we are currently surrounded by koala’s! After over six months in Australia it has finally happened. Another one off our bucket list, two actually, as we did not eat one, nor do we intend to.
Staying at Bimbi park, a camp site in the middle of the Otway National Park, has given us close encounters with ‘active’ koala’s. It is great to be able to observe these cute, fluffy and very cuddly looking creatures. They are very curious and very willing to pose for the camera. Even though they do little more than eating leaves, scratching themselves, staring at us and an occasional jump to another branch. Continue reading “Koala encounter”
What’s big, white and furry and found in outback Australia?
These questions are being fired at us from the back of the car. Kai is reading out loud from a book that we got at the library. We are all sitting in the car, as if we are ready to enjoy our summer vacation, but the car is not packed with our camping gear. Instead, we are on our way to Scienceworks for a day trip. Where I normally have no problem finding our next camping location, this time I am struggling a bit. Things are not the way we know them. Continue reading “What’s big, white and furry and found in outback Australia?”
Recipe oliebollen
‘Oliebollen’ are a traditional Dutch food/snack that are baked for new years eve , which you are likely to eat, if you are living in the Netherlands. There are always people baking them and they are a share food, people who bake them hardly ever do this just for themselves.
There are many stories about the history of this tradition. The one that I like is: in the middle ages they were given to the poor people, so it would protect them better from the cold of the winter. As they are full of fat and calories. Well, at least the first part of it anyway. Continue reading “Recipe oliebollen”
Recipe: making pasta from scratch
After the indulging days of Christmas it is time to return to the ordinary food. And for us, making our own pasta from scratch has become just that: ordinary food, which we all love to eat. The best part is that the children enjoy to help making it. Continue reading “Recipe: making pasta from scratch”
