Waking up with a bang

A car driving into a house, that is one of those things that you hear or read about in the news, not something that happens to you in real life, right?

Let me start by saying that no one got hurt, just to get that out of the way.

In the early morning Luka and I were sitting at the breakfast table when we heard a big bang and then an even bigger bang, sounding awfully close to us. When I walked to the back door to see what happened I was staring straight into someone’s eyes. Those eyes looked puzzled but conscious. Then I realized that there was a car between us and those eyes were just peeking over the air bag that had come out.

There was a car parked against our house! I could not get out of the door to see if he was alright, so I had to walk back to get out of the other door. By that time another person who saw what happened from a distance walked up to us. We both helped the man get out of the car and besides being puzzled he seemed alright.

What happened?

This is what we think happened. The man pulled out of the car park across the road and wanted to make a U-turn, which he did in a strange way. Another car honked the horn to warn him, which had the opposite effect I guess, as he hit the gas pedal and sped up into our driveway, hit our car that was parked there and then drove into the wall. I guess our car has taken some of the speed out, so the hit was not as hard as it could have been.

He hit our parked car from behind, and pushed it 3-4 m into the garden.

We called the police and after an extensive amount of questioning they arrived after what seemed to take ages, but ended up being about half an hour.

The police investigated the ‘crime scene’ and the driver had to take a breath test (all good).

So now we have a dented car and a wall that needs to be checked, but I still feel lucky, as things could have looked way worse. And I guess we will learn all about insurances and how these things are handled in Australia.
