Docklands Winter Festival Fireworks

Melbourne is known for its night-life and festivals. If you look in the right places, there is always something going on and something to be done. The Docklands Winter Festival is one of the highlights for us.

Blast from the past

So here our post from last year about it. And if you are in Melbourne and have not been here, this is a definite must do! It starts this Friday.

One of these festivals is the Docklands Winter Festival Fireworks, happening in the… Docklands… (duh!) every Friday night in July and August. And since the weather was nice enough (if slightly chilly), we decided to go.

Getting to the Docklands, we were greeted by a fire juggler. Good start!

Getting there was relatively easy. The Docklands are just behind Southern Cross station and the Ethiad Stadium. So getting there by train is no problem at all.

A fairy was telling fantastic stories to the kids, while the parents lined up at the coffee bus.

And, despite the cold, we were not alone.

So, even though it was getting late in the day, and the kids had had a pretty exhausting week, spirits were still very high. And it just got better.

With a big bang and (very) loud music, the fireworks started.

We had found a place close to the front, so we had a great view of the show. And what a show it was. The fireworks was coordinated with the music, playing some of the most known songs from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Quite a feat.

It was a great show, letting us totally forget the cold for the ten minutes it lasted.

A bit chilled, but happy, we made our way back to the station and home again.

Back to the station.
Back to the station. Luckily, the footy in the statium was still in full swing. Otherwise this would have looked a lot fuller…
The trip from Southern Cross to Jordanville takes a little over half an hour.

And so ended our night on the town. The cool thing is that our kids are rapidly getting old enough so that we can do stuff like that with them – and they really enjoy themselves. (And not just the fact that they can stay up waaaaay past their bedtime.) So it looks like we’ll be doing more of these activities and visiting more of Melbournes festivals in the future. I can’t wait!

  2. Wenn auch etwas verspätet: das war nun endlich der angemessene Empfang für Familie Poelchau in Melbourne, finden wir jedenfalls! Die weiteren Events lassen sicher nicht lange auf sich warten. Viel Spaß bei weiteren Ausflügen Down Unser!
