Shrimp on the Barbie

As they say: When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Except, of course, we’re not in Rome but in Australia. And what is more Australian than a good, old BBQ?! 🙂

Yesterday we went and got us a BBQ set. Not one of those gas ones that are so popular here, but a proper, charcoal one. And since the weather was quite good today, we decided to fire it up and have our first Oz BBQ… even if it was without the proverbial shrimp.

One big, heavy box with lots of black metal.

Setting up was quickly done. We also got us one of those coal-quick-starters.

With the quick starter the coals are ready to go in less than 30 minutes.

Since it's a new BBQ with an cast-iron grate, it needs some seasoning: pre-heating it in a coat of vegetable oil.

While this was going on, we had time to go shopping for meat to put on the thing. We have found out that, contrary to the Netherlands, meat at the butchers here is not only as cheap as in the supermarkets, it’s also twice as yummy. So no more pre-packaged steaks for us!

A big selection of very nice meat for a very reasonable price. We are turning into proper carnivores here.

And a wide selection of marinated chicken sticks. We went for lemon pepper and peri peri.

Back home it was time to put everything on the grill.

Our dinner for tonight, still in raw form.

Yumm yumm yumm.

Suffice it to say, our first Aussie BBQ was a success. The kids are trying more and more different things. The bread with cheese in the corner was Luka’s idea and Kai ate a large part of the steak. Both of them are also stealing bites from our corn and are sharing the sausage. We are definitely moving the right direction, food-wise.

Desert was the usual: hot and mushy banana from the BBQ with a dash of Amarula.

All in all, a big success. This will not have been our last Oz barbie, and, no doubt, we will get to the shrimps eventually.
