Up the money tree

Transforming an empty house into something livable is turning out to be quite the task. And an expensive one at that. Luckily, we’re having some help.

Contrary to what I’ve posted earlier about the amount of stuff that we’ve taken along from the Netherlands, filling a house is becoming quite the exercise. Back in the Netherlands we figured we’d just raid the local Ikea and everything would be OK.

Now actually being here, there are two problems with this plan. For one, while their stuff looks nice in a catalog, actually living in it is not really our thing. And the other thing is cost. It is only while you’re filling the house do you actually realize how much stuff you need.

Luckily, there are alternatives. And the biggest one here (at least that we have found) is gumtree. No, not the Eucalyptus tree so beloved by one of Australia’s most famous mammals. The second hand website.

So we have been scouring their pages in search of furniture. And we’ve had a bit of luck.

A queen-size bed (153 cm × 203 cm or 60 in x 80 in), complete with mattress.

A fridge, complete with ice box and Indian spices smell.

A side table for the (as yet non existent) sofas.

A large, hardwood dining table, complete with benches and big enough for a crowd.

And while picking up the fridge, we got a free mattress for Luka in the bargain. 🙂

So it looks like we’ll be doing some more searching on there, and maybe pick up a sofa or two, a mattress for Kai and anything else that strikes our fancy.
